Often, the small temples and grottos go unnoticed in the web of faith. These local and often frequently visited temples serve an important purpose, serving fisherman and farmer alike. Because of their common roots, there are times when books and such overlook them. Each however is as unique as the person or people who built it, love it, and care for it.
Maheshwar itself is built on the site of the ancient city of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya. Maheshwar was known as Mahissati (Mahishamati in Sanskrit) in ancient times and was the capital of Southern Avanti. It has many temples both small and large.
Very true, many small but old temples are neglected that should be preserved
I couldn’t agree more. I know that decades ago the local community would take care of these temples and shrines but many have fallen to disuse. It is sad to watch the rich and vibrant history that goes with them diminish also.
