Mt Erebus Ice Cave

Mt Erebus Ice Cave

This week’s retreat takes us about as far south as we can go…Antarctica.   Pictured here is the ice caves in and around Mt. Erebus, the second largest volcano on the continent.  It has been active since 1972 and is regularly visited by students from the local University.   Erebus is named after the Greek god of darkness.

While the climate is not necessarily conducive to prolonged hermitage and meditation, the sheer solitude would be almost palatable.  A few moments sitting in a cave made from ice that froze decades or even centuries ago gives an idea of tremendous age.

A friend and colleague recently returned from a two-month visit to the area.  It is amazing to look upon pictures and know that even with 50 below or lower temperatures, humanity has tried to break through the barriers.
