As of 19 December 2013, New Mexico joins sixteen other states, the District of Columbia, and eight Native American tribal jurisdictions in embracing the ideal of equal protection for same gender couples. This affirmation and acceptance of the diversity of love comes shortly after Hawaii’s decision to do the same on 02 December 2013. While this marks only 38% of the United States that recognizes this basic and fundamental right, the path towards total acceptance (at least from a legal stance) has begun and will continue. The decision, handed down by the NM Supreme Court in a unanimous decision, was the result of a statewide campaign that spanned almost two decades.
