Today in Dona Ana county, New Mexico (home of the Retreat), the County Clerk began to issue marriage licenses without any gender bias. While not politically involved in the situation beyond a simple supporter, there have been several friends and associates who have stood at the forefront of this. First and foremost, I would like to thank them for their work in making sure our State recognizes better the diversity and unique nature of love.
While I do not normally advocate on the Retreat blog (I have other places to do that), this fits with the theme that has been set forth…harmony, love, compassion. We enter this world unaware of the problems and issues that plague the everyday waking world. As we grow, society and our own paths shape our views and expressions. Each person has a path that they walk, chosen by them and shaped by the resources and tools at their disposal. The nature of this path is often dictated by the physicality and biology of our existence. Being able to express this openly and without fear of reprisal is paramount to being able to find our own self-actualization and enlightenment.
As with many of the other cases where individual county clerks have decided to issue non-gender biased marriage licenses, the length of time this will occur before intervention is unknown. Prejudice is often based on the fear of the unknown. With each small step forward, the unknown gets smaller and smaller as we explore the wide range of possibilities. Namaste to all.
