In the heat of the day, the sun beats down upon the earth like a drum. The river flows like an angry snake, driven before the mongoose. The branches of the trees lie languid, parched from the long drought. In the distance, thunderheads form and curl, promising like a lost lover’s kiss. On the shore of the river, sand bright and hot, stands a painted tree. Under the tree grows three flowers, pushing against the water, drinking heavily of laughter and the cool touch of moist dew.
